Using digital technology to track the spread of the virus is a slippery slope that could endanger privacy principles in a post-pandemic period. Despite the fact that the number of supporters of this approach has increased over the past few months, international organizations like Human Rights Watch, Privacy International and many others urge country leaders to respect the rights and freedoms of their citizens when using digital technologies to fight COVID-19.

However, the likelihood that such calls will have any effect in face of total economic collapse and the risk of a second pandemic wave is very low. Total online socialization and an increasing share of digital services, attempts at digital voting and elections are creating opportunities to track all data and control the opinion of the population.

Thus, digital totalitarianism will become a reality as early as in 2021, if not in all countries, then at least in many that have sufficient infrastructure.
